Primary Rate Interface – PRI

Primary Rate Interface (PRI) is a telecommunication standard used in enterprise voice networks. It’s part of the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) and is designed to support multiple voice and data channels over a single physical line. In contrast to its counterpart, Basic Rate Interface (BRI), PRI is more suitable for larger businesses with higher communication demands.

Key Functionalities of PRI

  • Caller ID: PRI lines support Caller ID, allowing the receiver to view the caller's phone number and name. This feature helps businesses screen calls efficiently and enhance customer interactions.
  • Call Forwarding: Easily forward calls to another number, ensuring that important calls are never missed.
  • Call Waiting: Manage multiple calls simultaneously by putting the current call on hold while answering another.

Advanced Telephony Features

  • Automatic Call Distribution (ACD): PRI enables ACD through a PBX system that supports ACD features. The PRI trunk carries multiple voice channels between the PBX and the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), allowing for the simultaneous handling of multiple calls. In India, a single PRI line supports up to 30 voice channels. If a business needs to handle more calls simultaneously, additional EPBAX cards can be added to the existing PBX system.
  • Direct Inward Dialing (DID): With DID, PRI lines allow callers to directly dial an extension number, bypassing the need for a receptionist or automated attendant. This enhances call handling efficiency and offers a smoother customer experience. DID must be enabled within the PBX system for it to function.
